Overheard in the Hospital Wing at St. Mungo's
No, I'm telling you that he'll be expecting me. And if he isn't, won't he be surprised, what?

What do you mean, I'm not allowed in after visiting hours? Do you know who I am? You must be new here, mustn't you. Don't worry, I have plenty of photographs left. Now you say you want my autograph?

There you go. Now if you don't mind, just turn around and go back to your station while I just pop in here to visit my old friend Ronald. There's a good lad.

AAH! Ronald! What a surprise to see me here, isn't it? Aren't you pleased? I can see that you are.

Here, I've brought you some sweets for the holiday.

Gilderoy, hi.

You know, it's actually good to see you.

It is? Oh, I mean, of course it is! It's always good to see me. Here. I had my elf make these. They're pumpkin... somethings. I don't like to call them pasty, because, well, they're not. They're more like little turnover things with delicious pumpkin and cream inside.

And then there's chocolate. Chocolate is always good, isn't it.

So, why is it good to see me, might I ask? Aside from the obvious - which is quite obvious, you know?

It just is. Chocolate, huh? And pumpkin.

I always liked Halloween.

Have a seat. Have some pumpkin pasties.

You liked Halloween? Do you not like it now? Is there something wrong with it? I'm sorry, I don't quite...

OOH! Thank you. They're very nice, aren't they. I do love sweets don't you?

Did you know that in some parts of this wide and wacky world, children go out into the streets crying for candies? It's quite true, you know. They dress up as horrible creatures and attack unsuspecting people IN. THEIR. HOMES. and shake them down for candy.

All Muggles, I believe.

Are you sure? I think that's one of those things people just say. It doesn't seem likely, really, when you think about it? Though I used to like those stories too. About the mad Muggles, I mean.

I guess I still like Halloween, but it's different in here, isn't it?

It IS different in here. Very different. That's one of the reasons I'm here tonight.

It's very lonely out there, my good man. I don't mind telling you that. Half of the people here are as mad as hatters, but at least they're here. The outside world is very big, indeed.

I get that.

Maybe we could get some tea, now you're here. To go with the sweets. And I don't mind letting you win at a game of chess if you want.

Oh! OH! That would be lovely. Tea with lemon would do very nicely with these sweets, and Chess, why I haven't played chess since... when was the last time I was here? It must have been at least a few days now.

So, tell me, lad, what are your plans when you're sent home and not allowed to live here any more?

It's been a bit more than a few days.

Give the guards a yell and see if we can get some tea. They like you. I'll get the board.

They've talked about sending me home, yeah. But I don't think it'll happen.

Oi! You there? Yes, you, the one in the green. No, not you, the handsome one in the green. Yes. Would you be so good as to bring some tea for myself and my young friend here? There's a good lad. Look lively. Oh, and lemon, as well!

What? What was that? They're going to let you stay? Well, that's odd, isn't it? I mean, here I am, out on my own, and you're still stuck in the loony bin?

I suppose I ought to have words with them.

I know, I'll tell them that you're coming to live with me. How would that be? I'm sure that under my protection, you'd come to no harm at all. After all, I'm one of the most powerful wizards of this age, did you know that?

No, well, I wouldn't say...

I'm not really, well, safe, you see. I'm sort of... dangerous.

Dangerous? Hmmm.

I suppose I could see that. Although you're not nearly as dangerous as, say, a dragon or a yeti, and according to my own biographies, I've gone head-to-head with them.

Unless you *are* a yeti, and you're just very very clever, fooling all of us.

Prawn to... oh, what's that. The little pointy-headed... let's see, one, two, three. Blast, I'm not going to count the little thingies this time, let's just move the pieces around until they have some kind of tea party.

Actually it can't go... Never mind. I'll just put the queen over here, right? This one seems to really have a thing for the knight.

Pretty sure I'm not a yeti. They're like ten foot tall and shaggy, right?

Some of them are. But they do know magic, so I suppose they could make themselves look like they're about two meters tall with ginger hair, handsome features, and freckles.

P'haps some yetis are very good-natured and excellent chess players, and only sometimes lash out and get dangerous.

Oh, my, what *is* that pointy-headed bishie doing to that knight?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]redgoldpride
2009-11-01 03:28 am UTC (link)
Maybe. I don't think I've met a yeti. Though there was a sort of giraffe incident at one point.

Huh. I thought I'd forgotten about that.

Let's pretend they're plotting together. And put some pawns there to distract them.

You have the weirdest bloody chess set.

Are giraffes dangerous creatures, as well? I think I might have fought one at some point. They have long sharp teeth, right?

I don't think it's weird. After all, the kings and queens look like me, and I don't look weird at all. I think the prawns are a little odd in how they act, though.

Oh, would you like lemon in your tea?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]redgoldpride

No, I don't think they are. Just tall, and spotted. And they eat trees and bushes.

They don't seem to know the rules of chess, is all I'm saying.

No, just black is fine.

You know, I think this pawn is having a hard time. I think it's unhappy, almost like the other pawns are ganging up on it. How's that possible?

I don't know. This chess set is supposed to be made for me and about me. Do you suppose there's someone out there who might want to bully my prawns?

Well, I don't think so but you never know. You could try giving it something to do. Here. Let's give it a proper challenge.

Yum. The pasties are great.

Do you ever want to come back? Here, I mean.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]gilded_heart

Do I?...

I do come back. Sometimes I visit the others in the ward. Sometimes I come back to visit the mediwitches who miss me. Sometimes I come back to visit you.

I suppose I ought to be glad to be in my big house just myself and two elves. It's very beautiful, you know. Lots of mirrors and gilded scrolly-things along the ceilings.

Perhaps I need to go on another adventure to some far away land and battle a monster or some kind of dangerous creature.

I like it here, though. There are lots of people here.

I don't think you should go on any adventure by yourself. You have to remember that you forget things sometimes. Some of those things are important.

It's busy, yeah, even if some people don't talk at all and others don't make any sense. But they're here. I just mean, that it's safe here. You know you can't hurt anyone.

Thank you for the sweets.

Well, what is there to worry about, then. You just stay with me, and you'll be fine.

After all, where I life, there's nobody else *to* hurt. It's just me there. Well, and my two elves. You wouldn't want to hurt the elves, would you?

[info]redgoldpride

No, I don't think so. I find them a bit creepy. Elves I mean. But I don't think it's their fault. I mean, that I think they're creepy.

Well, there was that one. Kreacher. He was pretty bad. But even then I don't think I would've... I think your elves would be safe. But it's still better for me to be here. Guards and all. You know.

Well, then, I could stay here with you. After all, it's safe, correct?

Oh, look, the castles are having a tea party in the corner. And it looks like the horses are prancing. I wonder if they're dancing horses. P'haps if we had music.

They do look sort of synchronised.

You could stay here, yes. I'm not sure they should make us leave if we don't want to.

I suppose if they say we're ready to go, we ought to be ready to go.

Shall I tell the healers I'll be spending the night with you, then? Why, this ought to be exciting! I'm afraid I didn't bring along my pajamas, but I'd be willing to wager you have an extra set.

Um, yes, well, I mean, I have extra pyjamas, sure. You could probably talk them into finding you a bed. I mean, a bed of your own. Obviously. Right?
